Jenelle Read a Book: The Nightingale

I’m just going to go ahead and say it… The Nightingale is one of my all time favorite books. Ok, It’s my #1 favorite. There. It has been decided!

If you haven’t already read this book, I urge you to immediately. I’ll send you one of my copies. Yes copieS - because I keep 2 on . hand to loan out at a moments notice.

The Nightingale is a love story. It takes place in World War 2 France and it is the story of 2 sisters. It is their love story about their relationship and how war, love and life changes them.

It is simply the most beautiful story ever told. It is elegant and full of grace. It is emotionally fulfilling and heartbreaking. It is a historical fiction book, but it is loosely based on a Belgium women named Andrée De Jongh who created an escape route out of Nazi-occupied France in WW2. Isabelle plays a similar role in the book.

The Nightingale is a story of heroism and loss. Friendship and family. And what the human spirit is capable of surviving when you have pride in your country, faith in yourself and unconditional love surrounding you. Isabelle and her sister Vianne display unbridled courage through their lives, each in their own unique way. They not only survive, they live. And they live with purpose.

I’m going to cry just thinking about it! The first time I read The Nightingale I only had a few chapters left when my infant son woke from his nap. I couldn’t leave the story so I put him down with a toy and stood in the kitchen alone while I finished. And I sobbed. It was so beautiful and so unexpected.

I’ve heard they are making a movie from the book. I haven’t seen much on the progress or even who will play the Rossignol sisters. And I haven’t decided if I’ll watch it. I’m typically disappointed by movies made from books that I love. I might just keep this story in my soul and envision it as my heart has lead me to already.

Please read this book. It will change you.
